Community Based Conservation of Village common forest in Rowangchari, Bandarban

Objectives :
  • Sustainable management of community based forests and institutional capacity building of forest based communities.
  • Livelihood security through alternative income generating activities (AIGA).
  • Watershed and its catchments area protection through awareness and plantation activities.
  • Advocacy and awareness campaign on forest and environmental security and biodiversity conservation.
  • Entrepreneurship development and increased of market accessibility for lively hood development in the targeted area.
Progress/ Achievements (as of June 2014)

:
  • Ensured sustainable supply of water from forests in Tulachari Para of Rowangchari in the locality through setting up a gravitational flow system (GFS). That helped improving public health and contributed decreasing water born diseases.
  • VCFs land (registration) recommendation (demarcation) letter received from headman (Local traditional Authority 1900 act amendment of CHT) and submitted through UNO to Govt designated Authorities of Land.
  • Designed and displayed signboard/billboard as promotional material in public focus places in Rowangchari for raising awareness regarding natural forest conservation and restoration.
  • Planted endangered forest species in the VCF’s.
  • Increased forest resources and water level in the stream.
  • Reduced to much dependency of firewood collection through providing Improved Cooking Stove (ICS) technology to the community.
  • Reduced dependency of Jhum cultivation.
  • Registered the VCF committee under Govt. Social welfare office.
  • Provided skill development training on agro-forestry, nursery establishment and management to forest dependent communities.
  • Ensured regular monitoring of the forest resources by VCF committee.
  • In 2014, the organization provided livestock project (Goat, Pig, Chicken etc) as input support for the extreme poor family of VCF dependent communities.
  • Improved the organizational capacity to handle this type of forest and biodiversity conservation project.
