Recolonization of Threatened Tree Species
Implementing Entity :

Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Chittagong University (IFESCU)

Location : Exploration and fruit/seed collection from the natural forests of Cox’s Bazar, Chittagong, CHT, Sylhet and Madhupur Sal Forests areas. However, studies on fruit/seed biology, determination of seed pre-sowing treatments, raising seedlings, clonal propagation and establishment of Seedling Seed Orchards (SSO) and conservation plots are located in the Chittagong University campus.
Duration : July’12 – June’15
Budget : BDT 45, 00,000
Objectives :
  • Survey and mapping of the existing individual tree or stands of the selected threatened species;
  • Development and standardization of propagation techniques of the selected tree species;
  • Establishment of Seed Orchards (SO) for ensuring the future seed sources, and,
  • Restoration of the species in its natural habitat.
Progress/ Achievements (as of June 2014)

:
  • Identification and mapping of the selected native threatened tree species in the remnant natural forests
  • Studies on seed biology of selected threatened native forest tree species
  • Raising planting materials (seedlings, vegetative propagules) of the threatened tree species with their appropriate silvicultural requirements
  • Establishment of about 9.635 ha SSO of 57 tree species in the University campus for future sources of fruits and seeds
  • Distribution of about 6,780 tree seedlings to the interested stakeholders including FD, PAs, NGOs and individuals and
  • Collection and collation of information about the threatened tree species for publication of a book
  • Major progress/achievements:
