Inauguration of Pre-Primary School in Chakma Para

A pre-primary school has been established at Madarbonia Chakma para, Inani in July 2015 with financial support from the Arannayk Foundation. It was implemented by AF's partner SHED and now managed by a local governing Committee from Madarbonia Chakma Para Forest Conservation Group. The school offers pre-primary education in both ethnic and Bengali language to 30 under privileged ethnic students of the area. A Chakma teacher from the same ethnic group has been appointed as the teacher.

Training on improved farming and skill development

In order to improve the technical knowledge and skills of the beneficiaries of the livelihood component, AF’s partner NGOs, Uttaran and YPSA, have organized 29 training sessions on ‘Cow rearing & fattening’ and ‘Vegetable farming’ in the last quarter (July-September 2015) in different batches. 750 project participants received the trainings among which 87% were female. Depending on the topics focused in different sites, Upazila Livestock Officers (ULO), Veterinary Surgeons (VS), Upazila Agriculture Officer (UAO), Sub Assistant Agriculture Officers (SAAO) along with respective Site Coordinators and Field facilitators conducted the training sessions.

Expanding Project Sites in Bandarban

Tahzingdong will conserve seven more Mouza Forests (also called VCFs) in Bandarban. Tahzingdon has been implementing ‘Community Based Conservation of VCF’ with financial and technical support of AF since 2009 and effectively conserved three VCFs so far. To mobilize communities, they distributed 4,750 saplings of local tree species namely Garjan, Chapalish, Dhakijam, Haritaki, along with bamboo and cane to the seven new communities. In addition, 3,010 grafts of fruit trees such as mango, litchi, guava, pomelo, lemon, etc. were distributed to the households for establishing mixed-fruit gardens in their homesteads. At the end of September the survival percentage was about 99%.

Promotion of local tree species by Hill Flower

As one of the key strategies for achieving project’s sustainability, AF emphasises on developing organizational and managerial capacities of people’s institutions’ leaders. Aiming that, AF’s partner organization Tahzingdong organized a three day long training session for the leaders of eight selected VCF management committees of Bandarban during 16-18 Nov’15. Abdul Mannan (PO-M&E, AF) conducted the training sessions as key facilitator with the support of AungshewShing (ED, Tahzingdong), and Piching U Marma (PC, Tahzingdong). In this participatory discussion and participant’s role play based training, the participants were mainly trained on the process of socialization, organization and organizational development and its tools, institutional set up and issues of governance to sustain a group and an organization, steps of organizational development, organizational planning and evaluation.
