Technical Officer (GIS/ RS)

Arannayk Foundation is in the process of establishing its GIS/RS unit for satellite-based monitoring and assessment of land-use and forest cover changes in its project areas and to identify potential new areas for intervention. The Technical Officer (GIS/RS) will be responsible for maintaining the GIS/RS Laboratory and developing activities, programs and projects in consultation with the Executive Director and Senior Program Officer of Arannayk Foundation.

Job Description / Responsibility:

  • Develop and implement GIS/RS-based monitoring, evaluation and research plans for the on-going projects of Arannayk Foundation
  • Identify potential new areas of application of GIS/RS technologies in line with the vision and mission of Arannayk Foundation and prepare research and monitoring projects/activities accordingly
  • Identify hardware and software needs for the GIS/RS Lab and prepare specifications for their procurement
  • Maintain computers and other equipment of the GIS/RS Lab
  • Undertake necessary measures to ensure data security of the GIS/RS Lab
  • Train field staff of Arannayk Foundation and its partner organizations in the use of GPS and collection of field data for validation of analyses made from remote sensing data
  • Contribute to proposal submissions and the design of funded projects/programs
  • Support preparation of timely and high quality project and donor reports in compliance with the needs of Arannayk Foundation's projects, donors and clients concerned
  • Liaise and consult with government and other external partners to support convergence and develop and reinforce partnerships in relevant programming.

Educational Requirements:

  • Masters' degree in a relevant discipline such as Geography, Environment Sciences and Forestry

Job Requirements

  • Age 30 to 35 year(s)
  • The applicants should have experience in: (a) acquisition and analysis of remote sensing data for supervised and unsupervised classification of, and change detection in, land-use, vegetation/forest cover and other elements of ecosystems using ENVI or ERDAS IMAGINE software, (b) use of GPS and (c) preparation of primary (digitized) and thematic maps using ArcGIS software.
  • Minimum 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience in designing, implementing and managing remote sensing based monitoring and research projects relating to land-use, forestry, climate change and livelihood-ecosystem interactions
  • Familiarity with open-source and commercial sources of remote sensing data and the acquisition procedures thereof
  • Strong professional networks that can help in acquisition and analysis of satellite data and GIS/RS related technical capacity development of Arannayk Foundation.
  • Experience in use of popular GIS and RS software such as ArcGIS, ENVI and ERDAS-IMAGINE.
  • Experience in statistical analysis involving large scale datasets
  • Computer programming skills and experience with high-end computing is highly preferable
  • Fluency in English language, both spoken and written.
  • Ability to write clear and well-argued research and project reports.
  • High level of initiative and independence in ability to undertake complex tasks while proactively seeking relevant input, cooperation, and guidance from relevant stakeholders and experts.
  • High level of commitment and integrity.

Salary Range

  • BDT 45,000 - BDT 55,000 (Depending on qualifications and experience)
