The Integrated Climate Adaptation Solutions for the Hindu Kush Himalaya Region (HI-CAS) Project is a regional initiative implemented in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan with technical support from ICIMOD.
The project aims to strengthen the climate resilience of indigenous and local communities living in Bandarban Sadar and Matiranga Upazila of the Chittagong Hill Tracts through a combination of ecosystem restoration, sustainable agriculture, and improved access to essential natural resources.
The project focuses on addressing the growing pressures of land degradation, unreliable water supplies, and climate-induced shocks that undermine livelihoods in hill communities. To respond to these challenges, it integrates scientific research with traditional ecological knowledge and community-driven adaptation practices. Core interventions include restoring degraded catchments, reviving natural spring systems through nature-based solutions, and installing gravity-flow water systems to secure year-round water availability for remote settlements.
Alongside ecosystem restoration, the project advances climate-smart agriculture by establishing family nutrition gardens, validating promising local crops through participatory research, and supporting the creation of a community seed bank to safeguard indigenous varieties. These efforts are complemented by extensive community engagement through health and nutrition awareness campaigns that strengthen household-level resilience. Together, these measures aim to build a practical and replicable model for climate adaptation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts.
The project is funded by Global Affairs Canada through the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development and runs from November 2025 to December 2028.
