Climate and energy are central to sustainable development. They are key to reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and helping communities adapt to climate change.

Arannayk Foundation has been a leader in community-based climate action in Bangladesh. One of its major contributions was the Climate Resilient Participatory Afforestation and Reforestation Project (CRPARP), implemented from 2013 to 2016. This project strengthened climate resilience in nine coastal and hilly districts. It supported over 6,000 forest-dependent groups in 200 villages through alternative income-generating activities (AIGAs), reducing pressure on natural ecosystems and helping communities adapt.

Since 2009, Arannayk has promoted the use of improved cookstoves in areas like Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Barishal, and Noakhali. Today, around 12,000 households use these stoves—cutting firewood use in half, saving 5,400 tons of wood each year, and reducing carbon emissions by nearly 10,000 tons annually.

Under USAID’s GREEN LIFE project, the Foundation introduced fuelwood alternatives and climate-resilient energy solutions, especially for vulnerable and displaced communities near Sheikh Jamal Inani National Park.

Arannayk’s climate strategy blends nature-based solutions with climate-smart agriculture, making it a national leader in grassroots climate resilience. These efforts protect the environment, lower emissions, and build sustainable livelihoods in some of Bangladesh’s most climate-affected regions.

Scaling Up Forest Landscape Restoration in Chittagong Hill Tracts, Bangladesh

The project (March 2024 – June 2027) aims to scale up forest landscape restoration (FLR) across Bandarban Hill District using proven models developed under the earlier CHT-FLR project (part of USAID’s COMPASS Activity). It also seeks to develop a more productive and climate-resilient alternative to the current practice of short-rotation shifting cultivation. The project promotes inclusive, community-led res... Greening Environment through Livelihoods Improvement and Forest Enrichment (GREEN LIFE)

Launched in 2020, the GREEN LIFE project addresses the environmental and socio-economic challenges triggered by the influx of nearly one million Rohingya refugees into Cox’s Bazar since 2017. The sudden pressure on forests and natural resources led to deforestation, soil erosion, landslides, and frequent human-elephant conflicts in protected areas such as Inani National Park and Teknaf Wildlife Sanctuary. Module Development of ‘Training of Trainers (ToTs) on Gender Sensitive Climate Action and Training on Integration of Gender and Climate Across the Policies

Arannayk Foundation, engaged by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), developed training modules, a policy brief, and other supporting materials to build the capacity of Government of Bangladesh (GoB) officials on integrating gender perspectives into climate action. The initiative aimed to promote gender-transformational change by addressing restrictive norms, fostering shared responsibilities wi... Read more

Market Study for wood chips, sawdust and other wood products including furniture (demand and supply)

This nationwide study examines the growing demand and supply dynamics of wood-based products in Bangladesh, with a focus on wood chips, sawdust, and furniture. Driven by rapid urbanization and a furniture sector growing at 15–20% annually, the country faces increasing pressure on timber resources. While local production and imports contribute to meeting demand, restrictions on harvesting from natural forest... Read more
