Arannayk Foundation has made significant contributions to Natural Resources Management (NRM) in Bangladesh through a multifaceted approach combining policy, practice, and community based actions. Central to its NRM efforts is the promotion of sustainable resource use among forest-dependent communities by introducing alternative income generating activities (AIGAs) and clean energy solutions to reduce pressure on natural ecosystems. The Foundation has implemented natural resource inventories and developed guidelines to monitor and manage forest resources effectively, which has informed conservation strategies and ensured better ecological outcomes. Projects like the USAID-funded GREEN LIFE and Protibesh activities have focused on enhancing co-management systems in ecologically sensitive areas such as Inani National Park and the Haor Basin, aiming to improve biodiversity governance and promote sustainable livelihood options. In the Chittagong Hill Tracts, the Foundation has employed the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM) to identify sites for forest landscape restoration and has facilitated integrated land use planning. Moreover, it collaborates closely with government bodies, such as the Forest Department and the Department of Environment, to ensure alignment with national NRM policies. Arannayk’s NRM initiatives are also knowledge driven, relying on extensive biodiversity assessments and the establishment of data-informed management plans for protected and community managed forests. Through these efforts, Arannayk Foundation has emerged as a leader in integrating ecological restoration with sustainable resource governance across diverse landscapes of Bangladesh.
The project aims to restore tree cover along the embankments of 10 Acre, 11 Acre, and 48 Acre shrimp estates in Chakaria, Cox’s Bazar—an area once part of the Chakaria Sundarban. Once deforested for aquaculture, this landscape is now the focus of a plantation and conservation initiative led by Arannayk Foundation. The work includes site selection, preparation, plantation of both mangrove and non-mangrove spe...
