March 16, Dhaka: Arannayk Foundation has initiated Bangladesh’s first-ever program for identifying and assessing potential geographical sites for other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs). Under this initiative, Arannayk Foundation will establish a national mechanism for the identification, assessment, selection, and documentation of at least 45 OECMs in Bangladesh by June this year.

Arannayk Foundation revealed this information during a workshop titled “Identification of OECMs in Bangladesh” held at Ban Bhaban in the capital today.

Speaking as the Chief Guest, Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change Dr. Farhina Ahmed said, OECMs will help achieve SDG targets which the Bangladesh government is committed to. A seminar on "Priorities of Forest Landscape Restoration and Biodiversity Conservation in the Chittagong Hill Tracts" was organized by Arannayk Foundation on 8th June 2022 at the Conference Room of the Department of Environment at Agargaon, Dhaka. The seminar was chaired by Mr. Rakibul Hasan Mukul, Executive Director of Arannayk Foundation. Mr. Iqbal Abdullah Harun, Additional Secretary of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Ministry was the chief guest, and Dr. Abdul Hamid, Director General of the Department of Environment and Mr. Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, Chief Conservator of Forests (CCF) were the special guests in the seminar. The seminar began with a welcome address by Farid Uddin Ahmed, Senior Forestry Expert of Arannayk Foundation. The keynote presentation was made by Dr. Mohd Abdul Quddus, Forest Landscape Restoration Specialist of Arannayk Foundation.

একটাই পৃথিবী: প্রকৃতির ঐকতানে টেকসই জীবন - বিশ্ব পরিবেশ দিবস ২০২২ এর এই প্রতিপাদ্যকে সামনে রেখে আরণ্যক ফাউন্ডেশন ০৮ই জুন ২০২২ তারিখে পরিবেশ অধিদপ্তরের সম্মেলন কক্ষে 'Priorities of forest Landscape Restoration and biodiversity conservation in the Chittagong Hill tracts'- শিরোনামের একটি সেমিনার আয়োজন করে। সেমিনারের মূল প্রবন্ধে পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রামের স্থানীয় জনগোষ্ঠীর জীবন-জীবিকা ও অবক্ষয়িত বন নিয়ে আলোচনা করা হয়। পার্বত্য চট্টগ্রাম কয়েক দশক আগেও জীববৈচিত্র্য সমৃদ্ধ ছিল। কিন্তু জনসংখ্যা বৃদ্ধির ফলে তাদের প্রথাগত চাষাবাদ পদ্ধতি যা জুম চাষ হিসেবে পরিচিত তার আবর্তকাল ২০ বছর থেকে ৫ বছরে নেমে আসাতে জুম চাষ আর টেকসই চাষাবাদ পদ্ধতি হিসেবে বিবেচিত হতে পারছে না। অনেকে জুম চাষের জমিতে কলা, আম, আনারস, হলুদ, আদা, কাজুবাদাম, কফি ও অন্যান্য ফলের বাগান করছে। বিশেষ করে তরুণ সমাজ জুম চাষে আগ্রহী না হয়ে ফলের বাগানে বেশি আগ্রহী হতে দেখা যায়। জুম চাষের আবর্ত কাল কমে যাওয়াতে মাটির উর্বরা শক্তিও কমে যাচ্ছে। ফলে স্থানীয়রা জুম চাষের নতুন জমির সন্ধানে ছুটছে। তারা অশ্রেণীভুক্ত বনসহ বন বিভাগের রিজার্ভ ফরেস্টে বা সংরক্ষিত বনাঞ্চলে ঢুকে পড়ছে। সম্প্রতি একটি জরিপে দেখা গেছে যে, রাইংখ্যং ছড়ি সংরক্ষিত বনের ফারুয়া নামক স্থানে প্রায় ৩০০০ পরিবার বসতিস্থাপন করেছে যেখানে জনসংখ্যা ১৪ হাজারেরও বেশি। সরকার সে স্থানকে ইউনিয়ন ঘোষণা করেছে। অর্থাৎ রিজার্ভ ফরেস্ট বা সংরক্ষিত বনের ভিতরে এ.....
